The Ultimate Guide to Selling Successfully on Poshmark
Selling on Poshmark is an incredible way to make extra money, declutter your closet, or build a reselling business. But if you’ve ever wondered why some sellers do really well while others struggle with consistent sales, the answer comes down to strategy.
Poshmark is more than just taking pictures and listing items. It’s also about understanding what sells, optimizing your listings, and using the right tools to make sales happen. Whether you’re brand new to Poshmark or looking to turn cleaning out your closet into more of a business, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to succeed.
In this article, I’ll walk you through how to increase visibility of your listings, maximize profits, and streamline your selling process. By the end, you’ll have a clear roadmap to growing a profitable Poshmark business.
Let’s dive in!
Setting Up Your Poshmark Closet for Success
Before you start listing items, you’ll need to set your Poshmark closet up the right way. A few extra minutes of planning now can make a big difference in how quickly you make sales and how smoothly your reselling business runs.
Choosing a Niche
Some sellers list anything and everything, while others focus on a specific type of item, like vintage clothing, athletic wear, or designer handbags. There’s no real right or wrong approach, but having a niche can help you attract repeat buyers and build a strong reputation!
If you’re just getting started, it’s ok to experiment with different categories to see what sells best for you. I’ve been selling on Poshmark for years and still sell a pretty wide variety of items!

Understanding Poshmark’s Algorithm
Poshmark’s search results aren’t random. The platform prioritizes active sellers who share their listings often, use relevant keywords, and engage with buyers.
The best ways to increase your visibility?
- Share your own listings multiple times a day (I’ll talk more about this in a minute)
- Use keywords in your titles and descriptions so your items show up in searches (again, more in-depth info later in the article)
- Stay active by listing new items regularly and engaging with potential buyers.

Tools for Reselling
A good reselling setup can save you time and make your business easier to manage. Some of my favorite tools include:
- Label Printer: Prints shipping labels quickly without needing ink. I use this label printer.
- Lighting Kit or Natural Light Setup: Good lighting makes a huge difference in your listing photos. I use a ring light because my home doesn’t have the best lighting.
- Inventory System: A physical system (bins with shelves, hanging in a closet, etc) and a digital system (spreadsheet or app) are both important for tracking what you have listed and help to prevent lost items. Here’s a free inventory spreadsheet I created for resellers if you need something to get started.

Taking the time to set up your Poshmark closet and business properly will help you make faster sales, avoid common frustrations, and create a smoother selling experience.
Creating Listings That Sell
Your listings are the most important part of your Poshmark business (after choosing the right inventory to sell). That’s because even if you have great items, they won’t sell if buyers can’t find them or don’t feel confident enough to buy from you.
Doing things like optimizing your titles, descriptions, photos, and pricing can make all the difference! Let’s look at how to create listings that truly sell your items.
How to Write Poshmark Titles & Descriptions
A listing title that just says “Nike Shoes Size 9” isn’t going to grab attention or show up in as many searches. Buyers often use specific keywords when looking for items, so your title and description need to be as detailed as possible.
A strong Poshmark title should include:
- Brand name
- Item type
- Color and/or pattern
- Size
- Any key details (e.g., “high-rise,” “waterproof,” “leather”)
Example: Nike Air Max 270 Sneakers Women’s 9 Black White Lightweight Running Shoes
For descriptions, keep it simple but make sure to give buyers the details they need. Include:
- Size
- Condition (mention any flaws)
- Fabric/materials
- Style details (e.g., relaxed fit, oversized, adjustable waist)
- Measurements
- Keywords shoppers might use when searching

Using Keywords to Boost Visibility
Poshmark’s search relies heavily on keywords, so including the right terms in your title and description helps your listings show up for more buyers.
Best practices for keywords:
- Use brand-specific terms (e.g., “lululemon Align Leggings” instead of just “leggings”)
- Include synonyms and alternate terms (e.g., “puffer coat” and “down jacket”)
- Avoid fluff words like “cute” or “must have” (no one is searching for this)
- Look at sold listings for similar items to see which keywords successful sellers are using

How to Take Photos That Convert Browsers to Buyers
Your photos are what sell your items! Dark, blurry, or cluttered backgrounds make buyers scroll past your listing. Luckily, you don’t need a professional camera. Your phone and good lighting are enough if you know how to use them!
Tips for better photos:
- Use natural light or a bright lighting setup (I use this ring light)
- Photograph with a clean, neutral background
- Show multiple angles (including close-ups of details and flaws)
- Include a photo of the labels (brand tag, size label, fabric, and care tags)
- Take at least 5–8 clean, clear photos per item
If needed, edit the main photo to brighten it, but most of your photos should be good enough to just post as is. If not, then figure out how to get better lighting (or whatever your issue is) to make they don’t need much editing, which can waste time and distort colors, etc.

Pricing Strategies: List Price vs. Offers vs. Promotions
Pricing is probably the trickiest part to nail down. Set it too high, and your item might sit for months. Set it too low and you could lose profit. A good pricing strategy balances profitability and competitiveness to attract buyers while still making you money.
Here’s how to price smart (and realistically) on Poshmark:
- Start with research: Before listing, check what similar items have sold for. eBay’s sold listings are a great tool because they’re easy to scan and give a better picture. However, prices may vary slightly on Poshmark depending on the brand and demand, simply due to different audiences. You can search for solds on Poshmark, but it’s not as clear.
- Price 10–20% higher than your ideal sale price: This gives you wiggle room for offers, which will likely make up a lot of your sales. But only do this if the comps (sold comparisons) support it. If your ideal price is too far above what buyers are actually paying, you may need to be a little more realistic.
- Factor in Poshmark’s 20% fee: Whatever you list, always work backward from the profit you want after the fee and cost of goods. Otherwise, you might break even or, worse, lose money.
- Use promotions strategically: Closet Clear Out and Offer to Likers are great for nudging interested buyers. Pair these tools with smart timing (like weekends or the end of the month) when buyers are more active.
That said, sometimes you’ll buy something that just doesn’t have the value you expected. It happens to me even after all these years! In those cases, it’s better to price it competitively and recoup what you can rather than letting it sit while waiting for a price that’s not realistic.

Using Poshmark Features for More Sales
Poshmark isn’t just about listing items and waiting for sales. Unfortunately, it’s not quite that easy. Luckily, Poshmark offers built-in tools to help sellers make more sales. Understanding how to use these features effectively can make a huge difference in your sales vs sitting back and just waiting for people to buy.
Sharing Strategies: When & How Often to Share
Sharing is one of the most important things you can do to get buyers to see your listings among the millions of others on Poshmark. Poshmark’s algorithm prioritizes “recently shared” items in search results, meaning the more you share, the more often your items appear at the top of search results for buyers.
Sharing tips to boost your visibility:
- Share your entire closet 2–3 times a day (at minimum). If you can squeeze in more, even better! I use a Poshmark sharing tool to share 10 times a day, and I think it really helps.
- Time your shares around when buyers are most active, like:
- Morning (7–9 AM): Catch buyers before work or during school drop-offs
- Lunchtime (11 AM–1 PM): People tend to scroll while eating their lunch
- Evening (7–10 PM): Popular time for casual browsing and impulse shopping
Doing this manually is a lot, so don’t worry as much about timing as just making sure you do it several times a day. You don’t need to be glued to your phone all day!
I also highly recommend a sharing tool like PosherVA, which shares automatically based on a schedule you create.

Using Closet Clear-Out & Offer to Likers
If you’re not using Poshmark’s built-in tools like Closet Clear-Out (CCO) and Offer to Likers (OTL), you’re leaving easy sales on the table. These features are designed to create urgency and help you close the deal with buyers who are already interested and just need a little nudge.
Here’s how they work and how to use them strategically:
Closet Clear-Out (CCO)
During Closet Clear-Out events (usually a few times a week), Poshmark offers buyers discounted shipping but only if you drop your item’s price by at least 10% from its lowest price in the last 28 days. Poshmark covers the shipping discount, not you, which makes this a win-win.
Why it works:
- It creates urgency for anyone who’s been eyeing your item
- Buyers get notified when you drop the price, making them more likely to click “Buy”
- Not only are they getting a discount, they’re getting discounted shipping too, which is extra incentive.
Pro Tip: Don’t just drop prices randomly. Use CCO to move older inventory or get attention back on listings that have a lot of likes but no sales.
Offer to Likers (OTL)
With OTL, you can send private discounts to users who’ve liked your item. The only catch is that the offer needs to be 10% more than any previous offer you’ve sent them. I do this daily!
Why it works:
- It shows you’re serious about making a deal, which can nudge buyers into action
- Most buyers know that when they get an offer, so does anyone else who liked the item, so they know it could sell right out from under them
- It reminds them of your item, and sometimes they’ll send a counteroffer (then you can go back and forth, eventually making a deal you’re both happy with)
Best practices:
- Send OTL within the first 24 hours of someone liking your item. Sooner is better, and I use PosherVA to automatically send a 10% off offer within 5 minutes of them liking while it’s still fresh in their mind.
- Use the waterfall method (details below) for sending offers to maximize your profits while offering bigger discounts to those who have liked it for a while.
The Waterfall Method
Instead of sending one big discount (like 30%) to everyone who liked your item, the Waterfall Method lets you send tiered offers. That way, you only give deeper discounts when you have to.
Here’s how it works:
Poshmark only shows a new offer if it’s 10% lower than the last one that person received. So, instead of sending one 30% off offer to all likers, you send multiple offers in increasing amounts. For example, you send offers on certain items in this order: 10%, 20%, 30%
The newest likers who haven’t received an offer will get the 10% offer, but those who already got the 10% offer previously will get 20% off, and so on. This way, you might still make a sale at 10% or 20% off without jumping to your biggest discount right away.
It’s a great way to protect your profits while still giving buyers a deal!
Both of these tools are powerful when used intentionally.

How to Sell Bundles
Bundles allow buyers to purchase multiple items from your closet at once, increasing your overall earnings per order. Bundles are my favorite! There’s just something so satisfying about packing up a bunch of items for one order. Offering a bundle discount can encourage buyers to add more items to their order instead of just purchasing one.
How to boost bundle sales:
- Set up an automatic bundle discount in your Poshmark settings (mine is set to 20% off 2+ items)
- Use the bundle feature to send a special offer to buyers who add multiple items to their favorites.
- Message potential bundle buyers with a friendly note like:
“Hey! I saw you liked a few items. I offer discounts on bundles, so feel free to add more items to your bundle and let me know if you have any questions!” - Mention bundles in your listings! Most buyers don’t think of it automatically, but adding something like “I love giving discounts for multiple item bundles, so add a few items to your bundle and I’ll send you a great offer!”

Utilizing these features regularly will help you increase your conversion rate (people who see your listings vs people who actually buy), attract more buyers, and boost your overall sales compared to sitting back and waiting for sales to come in.
Engaging With Buyers & Handling Offers
Building strong relationships with buyers can help with sales on Poshmark. Engaging with potential customers, responding to offers strategically, and handling lowball offers professionally can help you close more deals and even create repeat buyers.
How to Build Buyer Trust and Repeat Customers
Poshmark buyers are more likely to purchase from sellers who are responsive, professional, and trustworthy. A great reputation can lead to repeat sales! Especially if your closet is more niche.
Ways to build trust with buyers:
- Respond quickly to questions about sizing, condition, or pricing (these people are interested enough to ask a question, so they may actually buy!)
- Ship orders promptly. Poshmark recommends shipping within 2 days, but faster is always better.
- Pack items nicely. Some Poshmark sellers like to wrap items in tissue paper or add a thank-you note, which leaves a great impression.
- Maintain a positive seller rating by being honest in descriptions and providing good customer service.

Handling Lowball Offers Without Losing Profit
Not every offer you receive will be reasonable. Some buyers will send lowball offers hoping to get a bargain. Instead of getting frustrated, use these situations as opportunities to negotiate!
How to respond to low offers:
- Counteroffer instead of declining. Many buyers expect to negotiate, so meet them somewhere in the middle.
- Know when to walk away. If an offer is way too low and the buyer won’t budge, it’s okay to decline and wait for another buyer.
- Don’t take it personally! Sometimes people are just hoping you’ll take a crazy low offer, and it’s not a personal insult. Just counteroffer with what you’re comfortable with and move on.

Responding to Buyer Questions
Buyers may ask for additional details before making a purchase. Answering their questions quickly and clearly can increase your chances of closing the sale.
Tips for responding to buyers:
- If a buyer asks for measurements or more photos, provide them quickly to keep their interest.
- If someone asks: “Is this still available?”, reply with a simple “Yes!” and consider sending an Offer to Liker to encourage them to buy.
- If a buyer asks for a discount, make a reasonable counteroffer instead of declining outright.
Engaging with buyers in a friendly and professional way will help you close more sales and build a strong reputation as a reliable seller.
Scaling Your Poshmark Business
Once you’ve mastered the basics of selling on Poshmark, the next step is to streamline your process, increase your profits, and grow your business. Whether you’re a part-time seller or looking to make reselling a full-time income, focusing on efficiency and data-driven decisions will help you scale.
P.S. I have a course called the Reseller Roadmap that I created because I had a lot of resellers asking me for help with getting consistent sales, streamlining, and scaling. No pressure, but it’s a great, beginner-friendly, step-by-step guide to growing your reselling business in a way that’s profitable and sustainable.
Time Management Tips for Part-Time Sellers
If you’re juggling reselling with a job, family, or other responsibilities, you already know how important it is to use your time wisely. Creating a schedule and setting goals can help you stay on track without feeling overwhelmed.
Here are some ways I’ve found to manage my time better as a reseller:
- Batch your tasks. Take photos of multiple items at once, list in bulk, and share your closet at set times. I take all my photos in a few hours, just one day a week, so I don’t always have a photo station set up.
- Use automation tools. I personally love PosherVA for sharing and sending automatic offers. I believe it more than pays for itself.
- Set simple daily or weekly goals. For example, commit to listing five new items per day and sharing your closet three times per day. For sharing, attaching that habit to a normal part of your day helps! Like when you’re having coffee in the morning, when you’re waiting in the pickup line at school, and when you’re brushing your teeth before bed.
- Outsource when possible. If you’re growing your business, consider hiring help for tasks like photographing or listing. I personally use a VA to create my listings for me, and it’s so worth it. If you have older kids, you can offer to pay them to help with photos, etc.

How to Analyze Sales Data to Optimize Future Listings
If you want to sell more and waste less time, tracking your actual sales data can help you identify trends and make smarter sourcing and pricing decisions. I know I love looking at the analytics of my business because I’m often surprised!
What to track:
- Top-selling brands and categories (Which items are selling the most?)
- Average selling price (Are you pricing items too high or too low?)
- Sell-through rate (How quickly are your items selling after listing?)
- Best days/times for sales (When are buyers most active in your closet?)
Reviewing this data regularly helps you focus on sourcing profitable items and avoiding inventory that sits too long.
One thing I use that makes this easy is Vendoo. It allows me to easily see my analytics like top selling categories, top selling brands, average sale price, etc.

Seasonal Selling: What to Sell & When
Certain items sell better at different times of the year. Planning ahead and listing seasonal items early can help you take advantage of peak shopping periods.
Key seasonal trends:
- Spring/Summer: Dresses, sandals, swimwear, athletic wear
- Fall/Winter: Jackets, boots, sweaters, holiday outfits
- Back-to-School: Kids clothes, backpacks, etc. (I love selling sized kids bundles)
- Holiday Shopping: Gift worthy items, holiday and party clothing
The trick here is listing seasonal items at least a month in advance because people often shop ahead of the season.
