Confused About Poshmark Pricing? Here’s a Better Way to Do It

If you want to sell on Poshmark, you need to learn how to price right. If you list it too high, it may sit for months (years?) with no buyers. If you price too low? You lose out on profit. So, how do you find the pricing sweet spot?

The best way to maximize your profit without scaring your buyers away is to understand when to price high, when to price competitively, and when to discount or accept offers. While there’s no perfect way to do this, being somewhat strategic with your pricing will increase your earnings and still attract buyers who are looking for your stuff.

In this guide, I’ll quickly break down how to price your items on Poshmark effectively, when to adjust those prices (if needed), and how to negotiate with buyers.

When to List High & Why It Works

Normally, my take is that pricing too high will scare buyers away. But there are times when you can price a bit higher.

Reasons to List High

  • The item is rare, trending, or in high demand
  • You want to leave room for discounts and offers without cutting into your profit
  • The item is new with tags (buyers are willing to pay more for new items)

If you price too low from the start, it’s harder to have wiggle room for offers, promotions, or price drops.

How to Set a High Price Without Losing Buyers

  • Check sold listings: See what similar items have sold for and price 10-30% higher.
  • Look at active listings: If similar items are all priced higher, it’s usually safe to list high. If they’re priced low, buyers will overlook your item and go for the cheaper ones.
  • Factor in negotiation: Many buyers expect to send offers, so you can price high enough that a 10-20% discount still gives you a solid profit.

When to Discount & How to Do It Strategically

Discounting can help move stale inventory and attract more buyers, but it’s not something you want to do constantly. If you drop prices too soon or too frequently, buyers might wait for even lower prices instead of just purchasing.

Best Times to Discount

  • Closet Clear-Out events: During these, Poshmark covers part of the shipping cost when you drop prices by at least 10%, making it an easy way to encourage buyers to purchase.
  • Older listings (30+ days): If an item hasn’t received likes or offers, a small price drop may be in order.
  • Bundle opportunities: If a buyer likes multiple items, sending them a private bundle offer with a discount can encourage them to buy more.

How to Discount Without Hurting Profits

  • Drop prices in small increments: Instead of dropping the price by 30% right away, try 10% drops every few days or every week.
  • Use discounting as a strategy, not a reaction: If an item isn’t selling, consider relisting it with better keywords or photos before lowering the price too much.
  • Time price drops with buyer interest: If an item has several recent likes, dropping the price slightly may push someone to buy.

When to Accept Offers vs. When to Hold Firm

Offers are funny because some resellers love getting offers, while others are offended by them. Obviously, not every offer is worth accepting, but knowing someone is interested and wants to buy your item is a good sign! Even if it’s a lowball offer.

When to Accept an Offer

  • The offer is within 10-20% of your asking price.
  • The item has been listed for a while and hasn’t received much interest.
  • You need quick cash flow and want to move inventory.
  • When you feel like you’re making a good enough profit, even if it’s a deep discount.

When to Hold Firm

  • The offer is too low (e.g., 50%+ below asking price).
  • The item is high-demand, rare, or newly listed.
  • You’ve recently sent offers and have lots of recent likes, which may mean you could get a better price

Instead of declining outright, always counteroffer at a price you’re comfortable with. Many buyers expect to negotiate, so sending a counter instead of declining completely keeps the conversation open.

Advanced Pricing Hacks to Maximize Profits

There is one discounting strategy I love to use on Poshmark, and that’s waterfall offers. This is a great way to continue to give discounts to buyers, but while still maximizing your profit. Let me try to explain because it is a little confusing.

Waterfall Offers

Instead of sending one Offer to Likers, use a waterfall approach by sending multiple offers back-to-back:

Offer #1: Send a 10% off to all likers.

Offer #2 (right after or a few hours later): Send a 20% off offer to likers

Offer #3 (right after or a few hours after offer 2): Send a 30% off offer to likers

Here’s why it’s great: Since Poshmark only lets you send an offer if it’s at least 10% lower than the last one, this method gives you the best chance at selling items at a higher price than, for example, just sending everyone 30% off offer.

Final Thoughts

Honestly? I think people stress about pricing too much. Just find what works best for you and stick to it. I personally like to price competitively, but my cost of goods is relatively low. I know most resellers prefer to price high and discount or wait for offers.

Sometimes, it takes a while to figure out what works best for your business, but I hope this article gave you some ideas on where to get started and how to feel more confident in pricing.
